"Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues. This requires an apprenticeship in self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery - the preconditions of all true freedom." -CCC 2223

Olalla Bluegrass Festival

This weekend, August 18th, is the wonderful, local, homegrown Olalla Bluegrass Festival... tickets are a wee bit steep but if you can snag a family rate and have a bunch under the Free age (6), it would be well worth spending the day with some good music and great fun... check the website for info on the free stringed instrument workshop too!

Need a Service Project?

Volunteers needed for "green" storm water project plantings through the city.

Free Museum Day

Thank you Katie for the tip on the upcoming Free Admission Day at several local museums... many options here!  The date is Saturday, September 29th... check out the smithsonian site page for details.  Looks like they are limiting it to two tickets per email address.  So you can either deviate your way around that barrier or you can plan a special one-on-one date with a particular child.

Shakespeare in the Park!

Greenstage's last night of Taming of the Shrew is tomorrow the 16th!  Bainbridge Island, Battle Point Park.  FREE and FAMILY FRIENDLY! 7 pm.

Live in Kitsap County? Are You Catholic? Do You Homeschool?

This is the place to connect the Catholic homeschooling community of Kitsap County, WA. While I don't pretend to be a comprehensive portal, over time I hope to link up to resources for all of us here on the peninsula.  I' ll try to keep the educational polemic to a minimum (maybe throwing out a few quotes here and there) and stay focused on what connects us: our faith and our desire to educate our child our own way, on our terms. If you are new to the area, welcome! Ask any questions you want in the comment section.

I am Ellie, a homeschooling mother of five.  I hope to have eyes and ears on the community so I can  keep us up to date on activities, events and resources "around the Sound" that are relevant to homeschool families. This blog will not replace our e-mail notifications of our regular meetings at Star, (Third Fridays fall thru spring! Ask for details!) rather it will be a supplement so I don't flood your inboxes with all kinds of tidbits.

As this will most likely be an irregular blog, you'd be best to sign on as a follower there on the sidebar to be notified of the latest news especially since much of it will be time sensitive.

God bless!
